Screensavers

3D ScreensaverScreensavers were originally developed to prevent ‘burn-in’ or ‘ghosting’ or CRT screens. This occurred when the same stationary image was displayed on the screen for long periods which changed the phosphor coating on the inside of the screen. This resulted in sections appearing greyed out and then permanently damaged. The very earliest screensaver was simply a black screen that appeared automatically if there was no activity. As black means there is no light it prevented damage to the screen. This is what the ’sleep’ function does now.

In 1989 Bill Stewart and Ian MacDonald developed the first ‘Magic Screensaver’ which had images that moved around on a black background. The popularity of the screensaver grew tremendously and soon the images were being animated rather than being simply static. Following animated images came 3D animated images. However all these screensavers were quite small in size ranging from the original 16-bit Magic Screensaver to 132 KB – 334 KB in size whereas today these programs are enormous by comparison (2GB to 47GB). The more detailed a scene, the greater the size usually.

Promotional ScreensaverWith the advent of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and plasma screens there was no longer any risk of burn-in but due to their popularity screensavers survived. Several reasons for their prevalence include their entertainment value, security functions, uniformity, and promotional potential. Screensavers can be highly entertaining with the vast range of animations, cartoons and hilarious images available on the web. It can also function as additional security as you can set it up with a password- if someone tries to use it while it is in screensaver mode it will ask for a password before resuming its normal settings. Some organisations even use it to create uniformity in the workplace- by providing one screensaver for all employee computers employers can prevent inappropriate screensavers. It can also be a great promotional tool as they attract attention- especially at conferences and trade shows- and can display your business animated artwork and messages.

Multimedia

MultimediaMultimedia refers to using a combination of media to display content, from audio, visual, textual and interactive content forms. This is contrast to more traditional media such as print and still images (posters, newspapers, books), where content is conveyed through only one media platform at a time. Technological advance, particularly the advent of electronic media, has heralded the arrival of the widespread use of multimedia in the business world, education system, and entertainment industry.

The purpose of multimedia is not only to convey information in a more effective and attention-grabbing manner, but also to create an unforgettable experience that involves all the senses and interaction between presenter and audience. Most people think of spectacular entertainment shows (such as laser shows) or business presentations to clients and/or shareholders when they hear the word ‘multimedia’, however the uses of multimedia are very broad. The spread of multimedia can be seen across the internet, especially in social networking sites that feature photo sharing, textual status updates, animated games, and integrated video clips.

Multimedia can be classified into two broad categories: linear and non-linear. Linear forms do not require any interaction with the viewer or navigation control (such as automated Powerpoint presentations or movies shown at the cinemas). Non-linear forms involve interaction with the viewer whether live (requiring feedback or instruction) or recorded but needing navigation (menus on DVDs). In these forms the viewer controls the output (such as with computer or video games).

Multimedia Companies

Powerpoint MultimediaCompanies that offer multimedia services can transform your marketing approach for your goods and services. By converging a multi-sensual experience into a single form these companies use their expertise to take something complex and turn it into something that is easily used and accessed. For example, videos, presentations, reports, images, sound effects, maps and more can be combined on a single CD or DVD for your clients, shareholders and prospective customers.

The internet provides endless potential for combinations of multimedia. Multimedia companies can enhance your website to provide a comprehensive experience using voice-overs, Powerpoint presentations, animation, music, games, interactive content forms, and web-videos. This is then optimised to the smallest size possible for easy download and viewability.
